Part of the volcanic caldera on Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano. The island previously held a whaling station. It is now a scientific outpost, with research bases run by Argentina and Spain and administered under the Antarctic Treaty System.
