Harmsworth`s Universal Encyclopaedia 1920s - Social History. Map of Europe showing the extent of the ice during the period of maximum glaciation. Glacial deposits extended farther south. Europe went through a major population upheaval about 14,500 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, according to DNA from the bones of hunter-gatherers. An ice age is a long period of reduction in the temperature of the Earth`s surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Earth`s climate alternates between ice ages and greenhouse periods, during which there are no glaciers on the planet.
