Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who created a range of artworks from landscapes to self-portraits, characterised by bold colours and expressive brushwork. In 1888 Van Gogh produced ‘Portrait of Armand Roulin’ a painting of the oldest son of the post-master Joseph Roulin who was his neighbor whilst living in Arles, Southern France. Van Gogh used contrasting colours of yellow and green to enhance the stern look on his sitter's face.
