Pictured is a Uvalde County historical information plaque atop a low granite pedestal on the lawn of the Uvalde County Courthouse. Uvalde was founded by Reading Wood Black in 1853 as the town of Encina. In 1856, when the county was organized, the town was renamed Uvalde after the Spanish governor Juan de Ugalde and was chose as the county seat. Many cattle, sheep and goats are raised and Uvalde honey is famous for its flavor. Uvalde county is one of the best white-tailed deer hunting areas in the world. It is the home of Southwest Texas Junior College, Garner State Park, and the home and now museum of John Nance Garner, first Texan elected Vice-President of the United States. The date on the plaque is 1965.
