The United States Navy ship USS John P Murtha LPD 26 is named in honor of Pennsylvania Congressman John P Murtha, himself a retired Marines Corps Colonel. The LPD means the ship is a Landing Platform Dock, an amphibious ship where planes and helicopters are able to launch from and return to land, while at sea. Murtha himself was the countries first Viet Nam era veteran elected to the House of Representatives, in 1974. This is the Navy's newest class of ship. The ship was docked in San Francisco for Fleet Week 2023, and opened to the public with guided tours available. As enjoyed 4 October 2023.
