Stock Photo: Uniquely San Francisco Fire Hydrant Color 1

ID 284002445 © Peachpappa | Megapixl.com

Most fire hydrants follow a common color coding for the body. A red body indicates it is hooked up to a private water system like an underground well, where as white or yellow indicates it is part of a public system. This fire hydrant with a green body is unique to San Francisco. This hydrant,on the North Western edge of Golden Gate Park is a dry barrel, meaning there is no water inside. Since this is near Spreckels Lake, the fire department runs special hoses to the lake, which then attach to the hydrant. This is another emergency backup system, should the water supply get lost again, like in the 1906 Earthquake. As seen 12 February 2018.
