In Greek mythology, Narcissus (Narkissos) was an extremely beautiful young man, the son of the nymph Liriope and the river god Khephisos. When, at the birth of Narcissus, the famous soothsayer Tiresias, originally from Thebes, was asked if Narcissus would have a long life, the answer was that "He will live to a very old age, if he does not get to know himself" or, according to other legends, if he will never see his face.
