The tree is named the “walking palm” due to its unique stilt roots, which have been the subject of much debate. Some experts suggest that the stilt roots enable the tree to grow in swampy areas of the forest, while others believe that they allow the tree to “walk” from shade to sunlight by growing roots in the direction it wants to travel, and then allowing the old roots to lift into the air and die. However, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that the tree can actually walk.
