Traditional houses are found in the remote areas of Nepal where farming is the main occupation. These rural houses are generally very basic, usually made of materials that are available locally. They generally have one or two stories and are made of mud brick or stone, with a thatch or metal roof. Most of the Himalayan region of Nepal is far from road access, so people choose stones found in the river banks as the main source to build homes. A wooden balcony and courtyards are popular and widely seen in traditional homes. Traditional homes are built to provide warmth during harsh winters.
