The station opened as part of the Central London Railway (CLR) on 30 July 1900. In the early 1980s, the entire station was redecorated, with the plain white platform tiles of the CLR being replaced by distinctive mosaics by Eduardo Paolozzi, located on platforms, passages and escalator entrances.
