Pictured is the winged cobra `Meretseger`, one of a group of statues of the protective goddesses found in the tomb of King Amenhotep II. They were responsible for protecting the body of the king in his afterlife journey. They date from the New Kingdom 18th Dynasty, 1550 through 1295 before Christ. The material is wood, and the tomb was in the Valley of the Kings.
