The Latin name is the `Tropaeum Alpium` meaning `Trophy of the Alps`. it is a Roman trophy built in 6 BC in honor of Augustus to celebrate his victory over the 45 tribes who populated the Alps. The monument was partially restored in 1929 with funds from American philanthropist Edward Tuck.
