The Tower of London is a medieval stronghold, very well preserved, with a palace, houses, towers, prisons, chapels and museums inside. The fortress has been used over time as a royal residence, a place of confinement, a theater of executions, an arsenal, a zoo, an astronomical observatory, a mint, a treasure chest of the Crown's treasures. In 1988 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Tower is under the high surveillance of the Major of the Town, assisted by a special guard body called Yeomen Warders, renamed Beefeaters (March meat eaters). In addition to the centuries-old guards with the characteristic black and red uniform, the Tower of London is also "guarded" by a community of ravens who have lived here for some time. The birds are looked after by a guard in charge of this, the Ravenmaster, whose job is to check that the birds do not leave the Tower. According to a legend, in fact, if all the crows were to fly away, the monarchy and the whole of the United Kingdom would dissolve.
