The Bucegi Mountains shelter one of the most impressive natural monuments in Romania, the Sphinx. The shape of this rock formation resembles a human face, and many believe that this shape is a direct result of erosion produced by wind over a long time. However, scientific evidence is contradicted by some theories claiming that the monument is proof of a much more advanced civilization, or that it was built by the Dacians as a tribute to Zalmoxis an important deity in their past. Regardless of which theory is true, the Sphinx indeed has certain peculiarities that differentiate it from any other rock formation of this type.
