The peyote is a small, spineless cactus which contains psychoactive alkaloids, particularly mescaline. Peyote is a Spanish word derived from the Nahuatl peyÅtl, meaning `caterpillar cocoon`, from a root peyÅni, `to glisten`. Peyote is native to Mexico and southwestern Texas.
