The Peral was the first electric battery powered submarine, and probably the first to use a chemical process to regenerate the crew's air supply. The Peral submarine was first conceived on 20 September 1884 and the Peral was launched on 8 September 1888, sixteen days before another pioneering electric submarine, the French Gymnote. Converted from RAW with minimal sharpening.
