The Renaissance-Baroque structure was built by the Pálffy and Erdödy families on the foundations of the original Gothic church. Extensive renovations took place between 1642 and 1644. The simple exterior, reflecting Renaissance design with remnants of Gothic architecture and a magnificent pilaster portal, contrasts with the rich interior decoration.
