The Neptune Fountain was created by Le Notre in 1679-1681 and was originally called "Lake under the Dragon" or "Lake of the Pines". In 1736, the design was slightly modified by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, and in 1740, a sculptural decoration celebrating the god of the sea was added. The new fountain, inaugurated by Louis XV, is made up of 99 fountains.
