The Monastery (al-Deir or ad-Dayr in Arabic), a Nabatean structure from the 1st century BC, dominates the crest of a mountain north of Petra’s city center. Even at 50 meters in height and 45 meters width, it is dwarfed by its sandstone backdrop. The flat plaza facing the monument was carved from rock.
