Cacela Velha, to the east of Ria Formosa, is a beautifully preserved village, worth a detour on its own. In the main residential area of the small village, there remains The Casa da Misericordia eighteenth century and the town hall of the sixteenth century is the oldest building of the place. In the middle of the square stands the medieval watermill. Today this village is one of the jewels of the heritage of the municipality, which maintains intact its structure and its position at the top of a cliff which offers a particular point of view on the waters of the Bay of Monte Gordo and the lagoon from the Ria Formosa. The village was declared of public interest and registered with the regional inheritance on September 23, 1983 to safeguard intact its architectural peculiarity as well as the preservation of its history dating from the Phoenician period with traces Roman and Arab.
