The Kunsthistorisches Museum or Art History Museum is an art museum in Vienna. It belongs to the most important museums in Europe. The initiative to build the institution was given by Emperor Francis Joseph I. As part of the restoration of Vienna's city walls, in the second half of the 19th century, an exhibition ring road (German: Ringstraße) was built in their place, and the building of the Art History Museum with the opposite Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) was to create a unified complex within the extended Imperial Palace (Hofburg). The already renowned German architect Gottfried Semper was entrusted with the design, assisted by Karl von Hasenauer. The construction took place between 1872 and 1891. Both museums, whose direct connection with the imperial palace was eventually abandoned, were inaugurated on October 17, 1891.
