The historic Gothic Wisłoujście Fortress in Gdańsk Poland on the Martwa Wisła in front of the Westerplatte peninsula, dating from the end of the 15th century; its most important tasks were the control of merchant ships, their protection and the navigation of the light of lanterns, and until the nineteenth century it was of military importance; Wisłoujście Fortress is currently the oldest seaside fortification on the Polish coast; it was particularly important to ensure the safety of the Gdańsk port from the side of the Vistula estuary.
