The museum is located in the heart of St. Petersburg, and is the center of the cultural life of the city.The history of the Hermitage dates back to 1754, when the construction of the royal residence on the banks of the Neva began. The works were led by the Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli.The palace built by Rastrelli remained the official royal residence for almost two centuries. The interior decoration was changed several times, following the fashion and taste of the reigning monarch. Only the facades of the palace have retained their original appearance.In the Soviet period the former royal residence building was represented as a single museum complex – State Hermitage Museum.
