Pictured is an oil and graphite on canvas painting titled The Halberdier by Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler in 1895 on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. Hodler was born in 1853 and died in 1918. Grasping a long-handled, spiked battle-axe the armed solder, or halberdier, is clothed in the traditional red costume of a Swiss fighter.
