The Galle Fort, commonly referred as the Dutch Fort, is a Portuguese-built stronghold on Sri Lanka's southwest coast. The first de-fences, erected in the late 16th century, were fairly simple. This fort, though, was extensively modified by the Dutch in the 17th century, rendering it one of the greatest significant archaeological, architectural, and historic sites to exhibit European presence in South East Asia among the 16th and 19th centuries.Based on a UNESCO statement, the site was designated a World Heritage Site for its unique exhibition of an urban ensemble that depicts the interplay of European architecture with South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th century.
