Most people know the campanile or freestanding bell tower of Pisa as the `Leaning Tower of Pisa`. The Torre Pendente was built on marshy ground from 1173, which is why the tower was already starting to sag when the third floor was erected. Nevertheless, construction continued, and by 1350 it was complete. Several interventions have already been carried out to limit the inclination of the tower. The building is thus once again safe and accessible to the public. The tower, which is around 56 meters high, was originally part of the Duomo, which also stands in Piazza dei Miracoli.
