The `Covered Road` or `Upper Level` is a unique artifact in all European castle architecture and represents one of the most formidable works of medieval military engineering.
The covered road, also called the serrata or hanging road, has gigantic proportions: it is 167 meters long and 7 wide. It overcomes a difference in height of 10 meters between the keep of the Castle and the place where the Rocca Vecchia once stood, a fortress overlooking the countryside , at the edge of the walls.
