Spa is the most important tourist center of the Ardennes. The medicinal properties of the iron and carbonated water of the Spa thermal baths were already known in the 16th century. In the 18th century, a bathing facility and casino were built and the city became known as a health resort. The wealthy bourgeoisie had castles built there. Numerous crowned heads, composers and writers stayed in Spa.
