The Charles Bridge was built on the site of the previous one, the Judith Bridge, which was demolished in 1342. The construction of the new bridge began in 1357 under the patronage of Charles IV, and was completed in 1402. Until the construction of the Francis I bridge in 1841, it was the only bridge over the Vltava. It was officially named the Charles Bridge in 1870, and until then it was called the Prague Bridge or the Stone Bridge. The bridge is 516 m long and nearly 10 m wide, secured by three towers, two of which are on the Mala Strana, and the third in the Old Town. It is decorated with 30 statues erected around 1700, most of which are in the Baroque style.
