The central defensive wall, located in the central part of the plateau of Chufut-Kale, separates the Old Town from the New. The wall consists of two curtain walls, northern and southern. The arched gateway is located at the junction of curtain walls. The southern flank of the Central defensive wall is completed with square tower. In front of the wall the trenches were cut down into rock. The construction of Central defensive wall probably dates back to VI-VII centuries. The wall thickness was increased due to the appearance of firearms in the XV century. The wall has lost its fortification significance in the XVII-XVIII centuries. Since then the space around it was used for building.
