The island was discovered in 1499 Spanish Explorer Alonso de Ojeda. As legend says, heading to South America, he left on the island of patients with scurvy sailors, whose condition did not give hope for healing. Coming back, he found them recovered: local plants that contains a lot of vitamin C, saved travelers. Then Ojeda gave the island the name of Curacao (from the old Portuguese word cure - healing).
