Pictured is The Borromeo Madonna attributed to Donatello on display in the Kimbell Museum of Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Donatello was the preeminent Italian sculptor of the 15th century. The Virgin and Child relief was created circa 1450. Over time the original painted and gilded surface was disfigured by layers of stucco and overpaint. A recent cleaning removed these later accretions, revealing the quality of the terracota modeling. Donatello was born Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi in 1386 and died in 1466.
