The big spot woodpecker scientific name: Dendrocopos Major is also known as Chiku, chomping wood, huabender wood, huapecker wood, white flower woodpecker, woodpecker crown and wood crown. Small birds, 20-25 cm long. The upper body is mainly black, with white forehead, cheek and ear feathers, and a large white spot on each shoulder and wing. The tail is black, and the outer tail feathers have black and white cross spots, and the flying feathers also have black and white cross spots. The lower abdomen and tail are covered with bright red feathers. The male`s pillow is red. They usually forage on trunk and twigs. This species is known as `forest doctor` because it likes to eat many forest pests.
