The bell tower of the 13th-century Gothic parish church of Saint-Germain-I Auxerrois (Saint Herman of Auxerrois) on Place du Louvre has been proposed for demolition several times. Construction of the town hall was begun in July 1533 and not completed until 1628. Around 1650, a major fire occurred in 1871, in 1789 the mathematician and astronomer Bailly was the first mayor, and in 1882 (after renovation) the city council decided to hand over the town hall to the people
