The Begum Kothi (Lady's Quarters) was a large, imposing building with a lofty gateway and a double range of outer buildings which formed a square within a square, one side of which was the Imambara. The Residency, also called as the British Residency and Residency Complex, is a group of several buildings in a common precinct in the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. It served as the residence for the British Resident General who was a representative in the court of the Nawab. The Lucknow Residency is a witness of the First war of Independence in 1857. Lying to south of Gomti river its roofless buildings and smashed walls sprawling in a vast area of 33 acres stands witness to one of the most memorable siege of this British stronghold by the Avadh forces in 1857.
