Peniscola, also called the `Gibraltar of Valencia` is a fortified seaport. The castle, built by Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307, was a home of schismatic Avignon Pope Benedict XIII, also called Papa Luna. He lived there between 1415 and 1423. The views from the top are fantastic. The beaches are long and covered with fine sand. Castle has been much restored thru the years. The latest restoration was in 1960 prior to filming an epic historic film `El Cid` staring Sophia Loren And Charlton Heston.
