Colchester Castle was built by William the Conquerer in 1066 as one of his palaces and a fortress guarding the approach to London. It was constructed on top of an existing Roman Temple to Emperor Claudius since Colchester was also the seat of Roman rule during their conquest of Britain over 1,000 years earlier. Today, it serves as a museum about the history of Colchester.
