Taro stems are young petioles or leaf stems. Despite the name they are not actually from the taro plant known for its starchy roots, but are from related plants commonly called giant elephant ear, Colocasia gigantea, or elephant ear, Alocasia odora. The vegetable is popular in Vietnam.
