The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. Ukrainians used sunflower as a main source of cooking oil instead of butter or lard forbidden by the Orthodox Church when observing Lent. They were planted to clean nuclear waste in Chornobyl mentioned before. In June 1996, United States, Russia and Ukraine officials planted sunflowers at the Pervomaysk missile base where Soviet nuclear weapons were formerly placed.
