Renowned impressionist Edouard Manet's 'The Races in the Bois de Boulogne,' an oil on canvas, 1872, is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where it resided from September 24, 2023 through January 7, 2024. It was part of the blockbuster Manet-Degas exhibit at the 5th Avenue venue opposite Central Park. A total of 160 paintings and works on paper drew hundreds of thousands of visitors. The themes gave insights into the complex relationship between the two French artists who were among the most influential impressionists. They were friends, enemies, frenemies, rivals, and stylistic influencers of each others. Manet was born in 1832 and was Degas' senior by two years. Manet passed at 51, while died in 1917 at 83. Degas, a confirmed bachelor, was a misogynist and an antisemite, and sympathetic to slaveholders in the American south, while Manet was more focused on ideals of liberty and societal concerns.
