Situated in the St Just Mining District, one of the most ancient hard-rock tin and copper mining areas in Cornwall. In 1748 the first reference was made to the mine, in 1919 it saw a great disaster when a man beam broke killing 31 men, the mine ceased operations in 1930 but was latterly worked by the nearby Geevor mine, then was given over to the National Trust for preservation.
