The stomach is a muscular hollow organ. It takes in food from the esophagus gullet or food pipe, mixes it, breaks it down, and then passes it on to the small intestine in small portions. The entire digestive system is made up of one muscular tube extending from the mouth to the anus. The intestines are a long, continuous tube running from the stomach to the anus. Most absorption of nutrients and water happen in the intestines. The intestines include the small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. The small intestine small bowel is about 20 feet long and about an inch in diameter.
