The star of Bethlehem, Ornithogalum umbellatum, is a perennial bulb that blossoms in clusters in the spring. The flowers open in the morning and close at dark or for cloudy days. Their common name comes from the star shape that resembles that in the Christian biblical account of the star that appeared at the birth of Jesus.
