The SS Empress of Japan Figurehead is a colorful monument in Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC, Canada. The SS Empress of Japan was a famous ocean liner that was also known as the “Queen of the Pacific”. It had crossed the Pacific Ocean more than 400 times. The figurehead a carved wooden decoration that adorns the bow of a ship, was saved and and put in Stanley Park in 1927. This carving symbolizes the strong ties that Vancouver had with Asia from soon after the city was founded. When the original figure head started to deteriorate, it was restored and a replica was made of fiberglass. The original restored version can be seen in the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The replica can be viewed along the walkway on Brockton Bay in Stanley Park.
