An old parish Orthodox church was built on this site in 1780 and demolished in 1877. Then they built a brick chapel of the Valaam Monastery, which was transformed into the Church of St. John the Theologian according to the project of Juhani Viistu and attached to the Greek Catholic parish in 1932. The church was used for seminary students and as the archbishop's home. The church was transferred to the Orthodox parish in 1992, but departs from the Orthodox canons: there is no orientation from west to east, there are no domes, an enclosed altar, etc.
