The Sitting Eagle (John Hunter) sculpture is an important public monument in Calgary. John Hunter was a respected Stoney who was a key participant in the Calgary Stampede. A patriarch of the Chiniki Band of the Stoney Tribe in Morley, Alberta, John Hunter was recognized for his business and ranching acumen. He also taught Sunday School on the Stoney Reserve and was a drummer with the Chiniki dancers. He treated the old ways, the powwow, the dancing and drumming, and the traditional costumes with the greatest respect.
