It is the mature and already fertilized ovum of the gymnosperms or angiosperms plants. Unlike animals, plants are limited in their ability to seek out favorable conditions for their life and growth. As a consequence, they have developed many ways of dispersing and distributing their population through seeds. It can be on land, in water in the case of aquatic plants and even on rocks. A seed needs to somehow get to a place and it needs to be there as long as there are favorable conditions for germination and growth. In some cases, the properties that contribute to this movement of the next generations away from the mother plant are more linked to properties of the fruit than of the seed and, in some cases, to a mixture of the two.
