Known as "the Pearl of the Gargano", Vieste is a town on the Apulian coast famous for its beautiful beaches and its natural heritage. Located in the northernmost part of Puglia, Vieste is located within the Gargano National Park. Like other cities on the Adriatic coast, Vieste also has a center of medieval origins located on a hill and a more recently built area located along the coast. The historic center of Vieste stands on a rocky promontory, known as Punta di San Francesco, and was built on a hill to protect itself from invasions by sea. The area located on the seafront, however, is known as Punta di Santa Croce and developed from the nineteenth century onwards when the city also saw the birth of its tourist vocation.
