Marian Anderson (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; February 27, 1897 - Portland, Oregon, April 8, 1993) was an American singer, icon of the anti-racist struggle. She was a contralto much admired by Arturo Toscanini, who proclaimed that "such a voice is heard once in a century."
