Gloucester Schooner Festival celebrated Labor Day Weekend. Gloucester schooners are vessels that were built around Gloucester, Massachusetts, since 1713 for fishing and commerce. They had large holds and were designed for speed. They evolved over time from pinkies to clippers to square sterns and used different fishing methods like ice packing and purse seining. For more than three centuries, the schooner has been the enduring icon of Cape Ann region of seagoing heritage. No other type of vessel rivals its power and magnificence.
